Mary had gone for three months without hurting herself when she joined a self-harm group. She’d been in individual therapy for about a year but sometimes thought her therapist (who had never self-harmed) couldn’t fully understand where she was coming from. So, she joined the group in hopes of connecting with people who had been through similar experiences with self-harm. At first, she felt comforted by the stories of other group members and realized that she wasn’t weird, sick, or abnormal. Over time, however, she found it harder to attend the group. On one occasion, all of the group members showed up in T-shirts with the word “freedom” printed on them, with their arms and scars clearly visible. Mary left the group with overwhelming urges to hurt herself, and spent most of the next week thinking about how she wished that she’d hurt herself enough to produce the dramatic scars that other group members had. That was when she started wondering if this wasn’t the right group for her at this stage in her recovery.
